About the Event

Sturtevant Camp is a hidden gem located above Pasadena and below Mount Wilson (Sturtevantcamp.com). After 130 years, it is still accessible only by boot (hiking), welcoming hikers to a collection of rustic buildings including the 1897 Lodge. In 2020, the Camp survived the Bobcat fire, losing one of four cabins and most of its water system.

Since then, the Conservancy has been working to rebuild the water system, repair other fire-related damages, and reclaim the public trails devastated by the rains after the fire. The surrounding Big Santa Anita Canyon remains closed by the U.S. Forest Service to the public until it is rebuilt. California Gay Adventures, Get Out LGBT Hikes & Trailmixer has been invited by the Conservancy to join in preparing the Camp for eventual reopening to the general public.

Volunteers will hike 4.2 miles up the Canyon to the Camp, work for the day, then hike back out; it is a long, beautiful, strenuous day!

Volunteers will have options for work: depending on the status of projects in Camp, work could include basic raking and shoveling, fire clearance, digging and trail restoration, and interior and exterior painting. There may be some parts, tools, and/or supplies for those willing to hand-carry to the Camp.

We have to begin early on Saturday the 15th. The start time is at 6:30 am

Difficulty: Moderate (6 / 10)  Length: ~4.2 miles (each way)  Elevation Gain: ~1,000 ft  Type: Up and Back  Challenges: We may be asked to carry gear and supplies  Footwear: Good hiking shoes/boots with good grip and thread.  Gear: If you have knee or hip issues, bring hiking/Trekking poles  Other: Volunteers need to come prepared for a rocky trail with good boots, water, trail snacks and lunch, and work gloves (fresh water is available in Camp for resupply.)
