One Day, One Loop, Epic Views All Around

Hello Trailmixers, registration is now open!

We are thrilled you have decided to join Trailmixer's 2025 Fundraiser in Mammoth, CA this July! We'll be hiking Mammoth Crest Loop on Saturday, July 26th, 2025. This 15-mile loop hike will take us from the Red Cones Trailhead just south of Mammoth Village up and around the Mammoth Crest that extends east from the Mammoth Mountain ski area. The Mammoth Crest is a long dramatic and gorgeous ridge, full of jagged cliffs and spires on its Northeast aspect that tops out at 11,700’. This hike is suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced hikers! We will be having training hikes in the Los Angeles, CA area to help prepare.

We plan to play in style this trip, renting a condo in Mammoth Lakes, with après-hike beers in town. With planning to come in May, we also hope to visit the Devil’s Postpile National Monument as a day trip on Sunday.

DETAILS

Total Mileage: 15 miles

Trailhead Elevation: Red Cones Trailhead at 8993’

High Point: 11,275’ at Deer Pass

Total Cumulative Elevation Gain: 3830’

From the trailhead, we will hike up to Mammoth Pass, then climb steeply until we gain the ridge. We will then follow that ridge South and East, gaining High Sierra views in all directions, including windows onto Crystal Crag and the glaciers below. We will pass the beautiful Deer Lakes on the way to our highpoint of the day at Deer Pass. After descending to Duck Pass, we will make a sharp turn around the crest and descend a glacier cut valley back to Lake Mary and our trailhead.

This loop trail will take us into both the Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness areas. We will experience views from Mt. Ritter in the north, to Bear Creek Spire in the south, and the Long Caldera to our northeast.
