Emigrant Wilderness Backpacking Trip | August 14 - 18
Trailmaster Rick Gilles has planned another adventure for us coming up soon August 14-18 with travel days on the 13th and 19th! We are embarking on a 5-day backpack through the Emigrant Wilderness, entering the wilderness August 14 and exiting August 18. This trip is for semi-beginners and experienced backpackers alike. Of the 5 days, we will be hiking 4 days with a zero day in the middle.
Located on the northern border of Yosemite National Park, and backing up to the Sierra Crest (where the PCT travels the edge), this wilderness area is chock-full of lakes, trees, and large granite domes and fins. Some of our travels will be in the woods, and some will be over granite ridges.

5 Days in the Emigrant Wilderness

A trip for semi-beginners and advanced backpackers alike, we will be enjoying five days in the backcountry of Emigrant Wilderness! We do recommend having at least one 3-day thru-hike trip under your belt, but it's not necessary.
DATES + LODGING
August 13 and 19 will be travel days to/from the area with five days in the backcountry. On Wednesday, August 13, we will be staying at a campground 20 minutes from the trailhead (s’mores anyone?). Thursday, August 14, we will enter the park and begin our journey! On August 18, we will return to civilization and stay in Mi-Wuk Village. August 19, we’re hittin’ the road back to wherever the hell we came from.
THE TRIP BREAKDOWN
This trip will be about 43 miles with mild elevation gains and losses. Total ascent over the 43 miles will be about 7700’, and we will be topping out at an altitude only 9128’ – no Diamox needed here!
Each campsite is intended to be near a lake, so we hope you like to swim. While we will spend a total of 5 days in Emigrant Wilderness, we will have 4 days of hiking and 1 “zero” day at Emigrant Lake where you can enjoy the lake, take an afternoon nap, or join us on an excursion hiking Black Hawk Mountain (9.3 miles with 2200’ gain, elevation 10,348', all Class 2 climbing/hiking). There is plenty of water, so no need to weigh down your pack with liters and liters of it.
Approximate mileage per day:
-
Day 1: 11.5 mi
-
Day 2: 13.6 mi
-
Day 3: Zero Day or Black Hawk Mountain (9.3 mi)
-
Day 4: 9.3 mi
-
Day 5: 7.745 mi
